What data we collect and why we collect it

Comments, Contact Form, and Subscriptions

Readers can opt-in to subscribe to this website’s newsletter via email, by which they will only ever receive notifications of new blog posts. Email newsletters are powered by my self-hosted ListMonk instance, routed via SMTP through Maileroo, and include a link to unsubscribe from further messages.

Comments on this blog are powered by a self-hosted Remark42 instance. Users can also opt-in to receive email notifications of new replies to comments that they have left on the site. These emails are sent by my Remark42 instance, routed via SMTP through Maileroo, and include a link to unsubscribe from further messages.

Your data is collected and protected by me on my personal home server. I use the trusted third-party email provider Maileroo strictly to process and deliver comment notifications and newsletters. Maileroo processes your data solely to deliver these messages and is prohibited from using your email address for any other purpose. No other third party will have access to your email address, and I will never sell or disclose your email address.

Cookies and Analytics

If you leave a comment on my site you are opting in to saving a first-party cookie in your browser from Remark42. These cookies are not shared with any third parties and contain no tracking behavior. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

I use a self-hosted, cookieless analytics tool (Umami) to understand website usage and traffic to gauge the relative performance of different posts on my blog. Umami collects non-identifiable metrics such as page views, referrer links, browser types, and country-level geolocation. IP addresses are processed transiently in memory to calculate unique visits and general location, but raw IP addresses are never stored in the analytics database. No traffic or analytics data ever leaves my server or is shared with third parties.

Data Deletion

Users who have logged in to Remark42 and left comments on the site can easily request that all of their comments be deleted. Simply log in to Remark42 using the email address that you used to comment, click your display name above the top left of the comment box, and then click “request my data removal” in the sidebar. After clicking the confirmation link sent to your email, all of your comments will be automatically and permanently deleted from the server.
